Real Madrid Opens Club World Cup Action in Charlotte

The FIFA Club World Cup is finally here.
Today, Real Madrid CF takes on C.F. Pachuca at Bank of America Stadium at 3:00 PM EDT in the first of two group stage matches in Charlotte, and on Tuesday FC Bayern Munich will battle S.L. Benfica in 100-degree heat at 3:00 PM as well. Four more teams will battle at the Bank on June 28 and June 30 in Round of 16 play.
It’s a full-circle moment for Tepper Sports & Entertainment. Former Charlotte FC head coach Christian Lattanzio famously said “We are not Real Madrid” in response to criticism of his Charlotte FC squad.
Now, Real Madrid is playing in front of Charlotte FC supporters, as well as fans from across the world — though one of their biggest stars won’t take the pitch today.
Yesterday, I asked Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso about French superstar Kylian Mbappé’s recovery time from an acute case of gastroenteritis, as reported by the club. Alonso told us Mbappé “is getting better day by day,” and Alonso is “hopeful” he will return in time for Madrid’s final group stage match against RB Salzburg.
Soccer Sheet will be on the pitch providing exclusive coverage from today’s match and the tournament. Follow us on our social media channels for up-to-the-minute coverage.
